Camping at The Walls of Jerusalem National Park (bilingual poems)

Copyright © Miao Miao Qu 2004, 2007

The Walls of Jerusalem National Park is part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. It is a plateau with U shaped glacial valleys and thousands of lakes.  Peter and I camped there three years ago, together with a group of 40 artists. Although the aboriginals and the early settlers who did hunting and grazing there, this place is sturdily protected for its natural environment.  I hope people’s visiting won't ruin it in the future.  I do not know if the following verses express enough of my feelings at that time.

Alien-ness

From a creek I carried water back,

In the dusk along the bright duckboard,

I was seen by a wallaby,

With studying eyes it stared at me,

Where are ya from?

Ya ain’t from around here, are ya?

My answer was as simple as usual,

No, I am from China… no, I mean,

I am from Launceston, Civilisation.

Oh I know, said the wallaby with no surprise,

Would you next time bring me,

Some more peanuts please?

Endangered Human

Humans have,

Lost hair and fur forever,

But they make nylon and cotton,

Snuggling in Kathmandu® and Paddy Pallin®.

Humans have,

Lost canine teeth forever,

But they make stove and fire,

Enjoying Continental ® and Trangia ®.

Humans have,

 Lost bio-navigation forever,

But they make map, compass and GPS,

Reading Tasmap® and Trimble®.

Humans have,

Lost preying skills forever,

But they make guns, traps and nets,

Firing Winchester® and setting Shimano®.

What will happen to them,

When world catastrophe comes,

falling naked in the wilderness?Isn’t the human an in danger species?

Sleepless-ness

It’s the culture that I very like,

But in Paris,

Traffic noise of constancy,

Keeps me awake all night!

It’s the wilderness that I much like,

But in Walls of Jerusalem,

Roaring wind of endlessness,

Keeps me again awake all night!

It’s my own mattress that I most like,

But back home in bed,

Roaming thoughts of crowd-ness,

Keep me hopelessly awake all night!

The invaders
The invaders invading the invaded!
But we are protecting the invaded, are we not?

Came and cast no shadows,
Went and left no trace.

The places we went to: Noosa Heads (beaches and National Park), Noosa River Yacht Club, Sunshine Beach, Australia Zoo (Steve Irwin), Factories (bee, macadamia nut, ginger, big pineapple), Underwater World, Ettamogah Pub, Maroochydore Airport, Melbourne (shopping).

Queensland

Web Log

For example, if I say, the French are more intelligent then the English.

Peter would say, um...the intelligence has no national boundaries...

Halloween,

Ghosts and goblins. Witches and warlocks. Creepy crawlies. Not to mention Batmen, fairy princesses, and space aliens. For kids - and be honest - plenty of grownups, too, Halloween is a time when silliness gets a chance to shine. But for the dog of the house - or a cat or bird - the holiday can be a nuisance: A nightmare of doorbells that never stop ringing, loud noises in the night and too many strangers. Then there are all the goodies they can find that are poisonous...
